My work is the material record of an internal process of self-discovery. The art objects become mile posts or markers on the journey of my transformation through self-knowledge and awareness. Rather than seen as a straight path of preconceived ideas, this journey represents a slow and mysterious unveiling, a gradual understanding of unconscious acts and messages form my subconscious. This transformative process of discovery works on several levels simultaneously.
I work with concepts of projection and reflection. I use references to cultural icons and historical figures to convey (project) my inner states of being. I use reflection both literally and symbolically to connect the conscious and unconscious parts of myself. Reflection, in relation to making, doing and creating, completes the circle as well as the jin and yang cycle of my work.
My images follow their own process of transformation - from sketchbook, through computer manipulation, to exploding scale and compelling, tactile medium. I allow each of these stages to leave a mark and become an integral part of the finished product. My goal is to expose the creative act of becoming. To take this concept further still, I started photographing the art making process itself. I feel this photo record (document) has potential to further inform my work and to become an art piece itself.
